Maisie
I felt the warmth on my arm and the tingles running up my skin throughout the night. I felt them the next day when I got up and the maids readied me for the anniversary dinner that would take place late in the afternoon.
The princeâs touch had provoked an unrest over my body. In a way that Iâd never felt from anyone before. Even now, when Iâd lathered every inch of my skin with sand in the tub, I could still feel the heat of his mouth. It lingered, a phantom against my skin.
The whisper of his soft voice echoed through my mind. His beautiful face like a painting in my memories. One I wanted to trace the strokes of with my fingertips. I wanted to study the artistry of his panes. The sharp curve of his cheekbones tapering down to a pointed chin, the deep brown eyes that held secrets and mischief.
âHow different is Thalassar from Draconi?â Iâd asked. The question had caused a low growl of disapproval to emanate from Captain Saber as he trailed behind us. He obviously went ignored.
The question seemed to startle the prince. He blinked at me slowly, taking me in. It felt like he was seeing me for the first time. I supposed, in a way, he kind of was. Heâd seen Princess Odele plenty, but he hadnât seen my version of Princess Odele.
âIt is... very different.â
Iâd heard stories of all the seven sea kingdoms. They were whispered by merchants who went to Lagoona to trade. Draconi had been just another kingdom they whispered about. A kingdom of dragons and malicious rulers. They boasted a mighty army who rode atop dragons like hippocampi. No warrior was fiercer than the Emperor of Draconi.
And none more powerful than the Dragon Prince at her side.
It seemed weird to think of him in battle. She supposed those long fingers were made for more than gentle touches against her arm. They were made for wielding swords. For taking lives. It seemed so at odds with those gentle eyes and soft words.
âI hear you... have a dragon...â
His hand tensed over my wrist before his grip eased a fraction. He smoothed the action out with his fingers. âI do.â
I heard the longing in his voice, and it made my heart ache.
âWhy didnât you bring her?â
He cleared his throat. âMy father thought she would frighten you Thalassarins. I left her behind as a show of good faith.â
Right.
âWhat is she like?â
I wasnât sure who the question startled more. Captain Saber, who scoffed, or Prince Kai, who sucked in a breath.
There was a moment of contemplative silence in which I wondered if the prince was deciding whether he should answer me or not. He finally did, and it was in a tone that told me how much his dragon meant to him.
âShe is wonderful. I have no adequate words to describe her. In Draconi, we have a tradition where, when we come of age, we must choose our dragon by swimming through their breeding waters.
